Job Description
Basic Purpose:
The Forensic Scientist I supports the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory by performing confirmation testing of donor specimens, including specimen preparation, extraction, and operation of analytical instruments. This role reports to the Department Supervisor and collaborates with the Group Lead to meet laboratory goals and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain proper chain of custody and follow approved sample handling procedures
Adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality standards
Prepare and verify reagents, calibrators, and quality control samples
Operate laboratory equipment and perform routine maintenance
Perform basic data review and ensure documentation is complete and legible
Maintain an organized and clean workspace
Monitor and document temperature-dependent equipment
Participate in method and instrument validation studies
Report equipment or production issues to Supervisor or Group Lead
Complete continuing education and competency verification
Follow assigned work schedule and department policies
Maintain a professional work environment
Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education (Preferred):
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or Medical Technology
Alternative majors accepted with:
At least 16 semester hours in Chemistry (including 6 in Inorganic Chemistry)
16 semester hours in Biology (medical science relevant)
3 semester hours in Mathematics
Transcripts subject to QA department approval to meet NY State requirements
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of laboratory experience preferred
Familiarity with laboratory procedures and methods preferred
Physical & Mental Requirements:
Repetitive motion capability (e.g., pipetting)
Ability to sit or stand for long periods
Able to lift up to 25 lbs
Data analysis and general systems knowledge
