ROLE
The Mortgage Loan Underwriter is responsible for evaluating loan applications, ensuring compliance with regulations, and making sound credit decisions. In addition, this role will be responsible for reviewing real estate appraisals to ensure compliance with company guidelines, industry regulations, and sound valuation practices.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This position is responsible for the following functions:
Review and analyze mortgage loan applications, credit reports, income documents, and other financial information to determine borrower eligibility
Ensure loans meet FHA, VA, and other applicable government and investor guidelines
Perform risk assessment to determine borrowers ability to repay and recommend approval, denial, or counteroffers
Utilize Direct Endorsement (DE) certification to underwrite FHA loans accurately and efficiently
Stay current on regulatory changes, underwriting policies, and industrys best practices
Communicate underwriting decisions and conditions clearly to loan officers and processors
Work closely with loan originators, processors, and other team members to resolve any issues and ensure timely loan closings
Maintain compliance with all Federal, State, and company lending guidelines
Document underwriting decisions and rationale to ensure transparency and audit readiness
Review residential property appraisals for quality, accuracy, and compliance with internal policies and industry regulations
Ensure appraisals meet Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), FIRREA, and any investor or regulatory requirements
Identify and address deficiencies, inconsistencies, or unsupported conclusions in valuation reports
Communicate effectively with appraisers to request clarifications, corrections, or revisions when necessary
Maintain documentation of review findings and decisions
Collaborate with Underwriting, Risk, and Compliance Departments to provide insights on valuation risk
Stay current on industry changes, regulatory updates, and market trends
Assist in developing and refining review procedures and appraisal guidelines

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Direct Endorsement (DE) Certification required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: In-depth understanding of FHA, VA, and conventional loan underwriting guidelines
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: At least 3-5 years of underwriting experience, preferably in FHA/VA loans. Strong knowledge of FHA, VA, and conventional loan underwriting guidelines. LAPP/SAR certification for VA loans, preferred. Experience underwriting Jumbo or Non-QM loans, preferred. Knowledge of automated underwriting systems (AUS) such as DU and LP, preferred. Knowledge of secondary market guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA), preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Attention to detail, self-motivation, self-management, problem-solving, efficient time management, ability to prioritize tasks effectively, project management, good communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility, excellent documentation skills, analytical thinking, and ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote or hybrid environment

AVERAGE VISION: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus with 20/20 vision (with or without the assistance of eyeglasses/contacts)
PHYSICAL STRENGTH: The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds (unassisted), as well as stand or sit for long periods of time


WORKING CONDITIONS
General professional office environment with climate control and adequate lighting. Regular hours outside of bank operation hours to complete tasks as necessary.
