Job Description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligibility requirements must be met according to VHA policy, and applications must be submitted within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or license completion applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who previously met the qualification standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible, per VA policy.
  • Degree of MD or equivalent from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in the U.S.
  • Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in accredited programs (ACGME, AOA, or equivalent with verified practice in the U.S.).
  • Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Psychiatry, with 1-2 years of substance abuse experience.
  • Physical ability to perform all activities without restriction, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and climbing stairs.

Duties

  • This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2025, with initial review cutoff on May 15, 2025, and subsequent biweekly reviews.
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric care, including diagnostic assessment, medication management, and treatment planning within the Hampton VA Healthcare System.
  • Recognize and refer patients needing inpatient care; support and oversee clinical programs.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, participate in meetings, and contribute to treatment planning.
  • Perform evaluations, order tests, and make treatment decisions based on findings.
  • Supervise and teach trainees as appropriate.
  • May be eligible for recruitment incentives and EDRP, with application deadlines and eligibility criteria specified.
