Job Summary (Essential Functions): The Sommelier assists in overseeing the a la carte food and beverage service in the 1901 Grille, primarily focusing on the Club's wine programming, wine service, and member wine locker system. The individual ensures service standards are achieved, and that quality is to Oak Hill's Platinum-level standard. They demonstrate appropriate analytical skills, attention to detail, organizational, and project management skills. The individual has a genuine care for people and fosters a team culture.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leads through their commitment, honesty, attitude, communication, creatively, and willingness to listen and show appreciation.
  • Creates a team culture through employee engagement, recognition programs, meetings, training sessions, and team retreats.
  • Assists with supervision and progressive discipline of the 1901 Grille personnel. Coaches their staff and leads by example.
  • Establishes wine standard operating procedures that are consistent and holds service teams accountable for maintaining these standards.
  • Develops wine lists and specials. Works with 1901 Grille Restaurant Manager and Communications Department on wine menu updates and new menu rollouts.
  • Develops and maintains an inventory system for wine.
  • Manages wine purchasing and cost controls.
  • Conducts an accurate wine inventory monthly and submits it on schedule.
  • Completes quarterly wine glass and wine supply inventories.
  • Ensures all POS wine items are programmed correctly.
  • The 1901 Grille Sommelier is on the floor daily managing wine service during the dinner operation. They attend pre-shift lineups and are visible to the membership and employees.
  • Ensures that all laws applicable to the Food and Beverage operations are consistently followed.
  • Performs administrative duties including daily logs, inventory spreadsheets, supply requisitions, payroll, and associate reviews.
  • Maintains professional relationships with the employees and membership of Oak Hill to achieve personalized service.
  • Accepts member/guest complaints and works with 1901 Grille Restaurant Manager and Food & Beverage Director to provide solutions to achieve member satisfaction in a professional and timely manner.
  • Keeps current with changing member preferences and industry trends.
  • Carries out bylaws and policies set by the Board of Directors.
  • Any, and all other duties, as assigned by the 1901 Grille Restaurant Manager and Food & Beverage Director.

Experience

  • Five or more years of experience in food and beverage with at least three years of management experience. Private Club experience preferred.
  • Advanced Sommelier preferred; Certified Sommelier required.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university. Hospitality Management major preferred.

Licenses and Special Requirements

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Food safety certification.
  • Alcoholic beverage certification.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Able to meet and perform the physical requirements of the job and to work effectively in an environment that is typical of this position.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must have a reliable form of transportation to and from work.

General Information

Scheduled Shifts: Full-time, year-round position. Days and hours are based on club operations and weather conditions. Regularly works 45+ hours per week.
