Job Description


Summary/objective


The Office of Grants and Sponsored programs serves as the central headquarters for coordinating all grants, research projects and sponsored program activities. The Office partners with faculty, staff, and administrators to identify, apply for, obtain resources in support of teaching, scholarship, research, and the university mission and the strategic plan.


The Technical Writer-Research/Pre-Award Assistant will have the major responsibility for assisting the Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs with researching, drafting, interpreting guidelines, coordinating, and monitoring the progress of all proposals to be submitted to federal, state, local, and Foundation sources. This individual serves as a liaison between the Director and the faculty, staff, and administrator and assists them in their area with proposal preparation, processing, submission, and pre-award administration.


*This position is funded 100% by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant. As such, the Technical Writer assists the Director with implementing the objectives established in the Title III Program for this federally-funded activity.


Essential functions

  • Gathers and assembles data from University units and other sources to prepare proposals.
  • Prepares and assembles proposals for submission to funding agencies,
  • Generates proposals that are interdisciplinary or cross- departmental/


    college lines.
  • Gathers research data associated with proposal/research project subject


    matter for the inclusion in proposal packages in situations where other


    University personnel may not be available.
  • Developing workshops and seminars.
  • Compiles and maintains databases associated with grants and other


    office activities.
  • Researches, prepares, and submits quality major research proposals to


    various funding agencies.

Pre-award activities

  • Provides technical support and assistance to faculty, staff, and administrators in writing grants.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Federal Cost Accounting Standards and Uniform Guidance requirements.
  • Experience working with faculty in a higher education setting. Experience preparing project budgets, including salary calculations. Familiarity with the administrative activities associated with the scientific research process.
  • Demonstrated experience with federal submission portals such as grants.gov, NSF research.gov, or NIH ASSIST.
  • Demonstrate excellent people, oral communication and customer service skills.
  • Have the aptitude to interact with individuals in a professional, diplomatic and courteous manner.
  • Have the proven ability to handle multiple competing priorities and to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands.
  • Utilize independent judgment, problem solving and decision making in order to respond to constituents and represent the office in an effective and appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrate advanced skills for Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams, and Outlook.

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Two to three years of relevant experience in the area.
  • One to two years of higher education experience.


    Preferred education and experience
    •Master's degree desirable.
