Job Description

The role

The School of Arts is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic technician with demonstrable practical experience of working in theatres to help to provide technical support to The Department of Theatre within the University’s Wickham Building.

The Wickham Building boasts two flexible, well-equipped studio theatres - the Wickham and the White - rehearsal rooms, design and costume workshops, prop stores and lecture and seminar rooms. This role is responsible for the organisation, maintenance and ongoing operation of the theatre spaces, stores and other resources within the building. It also requires stock taking, sourcing equipment, and demonstrating and distributing AV and media resources such as cameras, audio equipment and projectors. Experience of lighting desks is essential, as is an understanding of the practicalities of a working theatre, including rigging.

If you are someone who wants to inspire students and support lecturers and researchers with your practical and technical experience in performing arts and theatre, this is the role for you.

What will you be doing?

You will support students with their technical production needs around lighting, projection mapping, and any audio-visual assistance.

You will support teaching staff with any technical or manual needs.

You will demonstrate the use of audio-visual equipment such as video cameras, the use of counterweight flying in the theatre and the use of lighting desks – ETC and/or Zero 88 knowledge is essential.

You will be able to plan production schedules for performance units.

You will be able to organise resources such as media equipment, lighting stores, and prop stores and replace any necessary stock within a budget.

You will have the ability to perform general maintenance on lanterns and other technical resources. The role requires someone to provide upkeep and updating of resources within the two theatres and around the other stores and spaces as well.

Stage safety knowledge is a must and an understanding of health and safety requirements in a performance environment eg using risk assessments.

Knowledge of Q-Lab and audio equipment would be an advantage.

There may be some evening and weekend work required.

You should apply if

You are an excellent communicator and a collaborative team player with the ability to interpret and support student ideas in a theatre context.

You have proven experience with, and understand, the rigging requirements of a working theatre.

You are highly organised, enthusiastic, adaptable and can work on your own initiative to support student performance and innovation in the Department of Theatre.
