Position Summary
The Electronic Repair Technician (VFD Specialist) is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, testing, and maintaining Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and related electronic control systems. This role ensures repaired drives meet manufacturer specifications, safety standards, and customer performance requirements. The technician will work with power electronics, control circuits, and industrial automation equipment, providing reliable service to support uptime and efficiency for customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair VFDs and associated electronic components down to the component level.
- Troubleshoot and test AC/DC drives, power modules, IGBT transistors, control boards, and communication interfaces.
- Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, and functional testing on drives.
- Use diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, insulation testers, and specialized drive software.
- Load, back up, and restore drive parameters; update firmware when required.
- Document repair activities, parts used, test results, and final repair outcomes in company systems.
- Follow safety standards for working with high-voltage equipment and stored energy devices.
- Support field technicians and engineering teams with technical insights on recurring failures.
- Maintain proper ESD practices and keep the repair bench/workstation clean and organized.
- Participate in ongoing training to remain current with new VFD models and repair techniques.
Accountability
The Electronic Repair Technician VFDs is
accountable for :
- Repair Quality : Ensuring all VFDs are repaired, tested, and certified to perform reliably under load.
- Safety Compliance : Following electrical safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA, ESD procedures) and company safety protocols.
- Turnaround Time : Meeting repair deadlines and supporting customer commitments.
- Documentation : Accurately recording test results, parameter settings, and repair notes.
- Tool & Equipment Care : Proper use and upkeep of specialized test benches, software, and measurement tools.
- Customer Satisfaction : Providing reliable drive repairs that reduce downtime and maintain customer trust.
- Continuous Improvement : Identifying root causes of recurring VFD failures and recommending process or design improvements.
Qualifications
- Associate degree, technical diploma, or military training in electronics/electrical engineering technology (or equivalent experience).
- 2+ years of experience troubleshooting and repairing VFDs or power electronic systems.
- Proficiency in component-level troubleshooting of control and power circuits.
- Skilled in soldering/reworking boards, replacing IGBTs, diodes, and capacitors.
- Experience with drive-specific diagnostic software and parameter programming.
- Knowledge of industrial automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, communication networks) a plus.
- Strong problem-solving, safety awareness, and documentation skills.
